How eBay fees actually work in the UK

eBay does not charge one flat percentage. What you pay depends on where you sell, whether you are a business or private seller, which category the item sits in, how much it sold for, and in the US whether you have a shop subscription. This page sets out all of it.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom

Private sellers pay nothing

Since 1 October 2024, UK private sellers pay no final value fee, no per-order fee and no regulatory fee on ordinary domestic sales. eBay charges the buyer a Buyer Protection Fee instead, so your proceeds are the full amount you listed.

Watch out for outdated calculators. Several eBay fee calculators still show UK private sellers paying 12.8%. That has not been correct since October 2024. If a tool charges you a private-seller final value fee, its data is stale.

Business sellers pay four things

ChargeWhat it is
Final value feeCategory-based, charged on the item plus the postage the buyer paid. Ranges from 6.9% to 14.9%, and many categories are tiered — a higher rate up to a threshold, a lower rate above it.
Per-order fee£0.30 on orders up to £10, £0.40 above. Some categories charge 10p on small orders.
Regulatory operating fee0.35% of the total sale, covering eBay's compliance costs.
VAT20% on top of all the fees above. Reclaimable if you are VAT-registered on the standard scheme.

What this calculator does not model

Being straight about the limits. Maximum fee caps per item are not applied. eBay Motors and Classified Ads use separate schedules and are excluded. Some deep subcategories carry their own rates that are not listed here. Fees change — the date at the top of this page is when these rules were last checked, and eBay's own fee pages are always the final word.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage does eBay take in the UK?

For business sellers, a category final value fee between 6.9% and 14.9% on the item plus postage, a per-order fee of £0.30 or £0.40, a 0.35% regulatory operating fee, and 20% VAT on all of it. Private sellers pay nothing on ordinary domestic sales.

Do eBay fees apply to postage?

Yes. The final value fee is charged on the total the buyer paid, which includes the postage you charged them.

How do I work out what price to list at?

Switch this calculator to Profit → Price, enter what you paid and the profit you want, and it gives you the price to list at with every fee already accounted for.

Why can't eBay show me my profit?

eBay knows what the buyer paid and what it charged you. It has no record of what you paid your supplier, because that purchase happened elsewhere. Without cost of goods, profit cannot be calculated.
